Making a grubby candle part 2
By admin | November 7, 2007
Continue creating the grubby pillar candle.
Step 4. Adding candle scent
Most waxes will only hold one ounce of scent per pound of wax. Do not try and add more scent than this. The excess scent will seep through the bottom or sides of the candle and could burn your skin.
We will use the one-ounce per pound formula for our candle. Using an accurate scale we pour the desired amount of scent into a small plastic cup. We then add our scent directly to the melted wax.
Dispose of the plastic cup that you used to measure the scent. If you leave it on your workspace, the small amount of scent that is left left in the bottom of the cup will eat through the plasticand could stain your workspace or burn your skin.
Beware most candle scent is very concentrated and can burn or irritate your skin. Avoid direct contact with your skin and your eyes. We would recommend wearing gloves. ANY cinnamon based scent seems to be extremely easy to irritate the skin so be careful.
Step 5. Creating the outside candle texture
Now for the fun part! Now that our wax has been dyed and scented we need to start the next step. Place your finished pillar candle on some wax paper as this can get messy. We want our wax to cool a bit.
As soon as it starts to form a skin on the surface, it’s time to work.

We want to whip the wax by placing the spoon or spatula into your wax and stirring vigorously. BE CAREFUL THE WAX IS STILL HOT AND CAN BURN.

As always you should be wearing gloves and eye protection
This causes the wax to form an icing like texture. We have to work as fast as possible .We don’t want the wax to get to cool. If it does we can’t work with it and it will have to be re-heated and whipped again.
As it starts to solidify to a thin oatmeal like texture scoop out the wax and apply it to the outside of the candle as if you were icing a cake. Do this until the candle is completely covered and it has achieved the desired texture. For large candles it will have to be repeated several times until the surface has been covered.

This method creates a one of a kind candle each time.
Creative Tip! When creating the texture for the candle you can use small chunks of wax to achieve a different chunkier look. Simply sprinkle the chunks onto the surface of the candle and cover with your whipped wax.

Creative Tip! When the texturing is completed. You may want to give your candle a glazed look. This can be achieved by dipping the finished candle into some melted wax that has not been dyed. BE VERY CAREFULL WHEN DIPPING CANDLES!

This is one method that can be used to achieve this effect.
Now we will go onto another. Steps 1-4 would be identical. It is the texturing step that is quite different and creates a completely different style grubby primitive candle.
