Making a grubby candle with a shape in the front

By admin | November 7, 2007

In this article I will show you how to make a grubby candle with different shapes on the front like this one!

Grubby candle heart shape

Now that you have mastered the grubby technique, I will show you an advanced method that can produce some beautiful results

For this example we will be creating a heart shape that is recessed into the candle. Be creative and go wild with the shapes, you can create any shape that you want!

With modeling clay we have created a heart shape that is about 1/3 of inch thick.

Clay heart for our candle

Once again we start with a plain smooth pillar candle that we created in our earlier tutorials except for this one will we not use any dye.

So we will have a scented plain white pillar candle.

Modeling clay will stick to the smooth walls of the plain pillar candle.

We center our heart shape on the front of the candle and apply even pressure just enough so that it sticks to the surface of the candle.

Applying the clay heart

Now it’s time to add our texture. For this example we want a dark base for our texture. This will create a beautiful contrast between our outside texture and cutout. We can use either one of the grubby methods that we described earlier. Using the method that you like the most, continue to cover the outside of the candle.

Adding texture

Do not cover the clay piece completely with your desired texture!

Once you have completely covered the candle and are happy with the texture it’s time to remove our clay piece.

Plastic utensils work great for removing the clay piece. Using the end of a spoon gently remove or dig out all of the clay. When you are done removing the clay you will have a recessed portion of the candle in the shape of the clay! This can create some really interesting candles!
Enjoy!
