Making a grubby iced primitive candle
By admin | November 7, 2007
In this article we dive into creating the grubby primitive candle. These are also sometimes called iced candles because the outside texture looks like icing from a cake. Learn all about them in here!

Supplies needed for Primitive Grubby candles.
- Fire extinguisher
- An Accurate Digital gram scale
- Wooden Spoon or Spatula that can withstand high temperatures.
- Finished Pillar candle
- Pillar Wax ( There are many waxes available in candle making. For this example we have chosen a pre-blended paraffin wax. This wax has a high melt temp and it is very easy to use. It also has a wonderful scent throw without using any Additives. The wax is manufactured by The International Group. The product name is IGI 4625. )
- Candle Scent
- Candle Dye
- Thermometer
- Double Boiler
- Gloves
- Hammer for breaking wax
- Eye protection (You don’t want hot wax, dye or scent in your eyes)
- Small plastic cups
There are several ways to create these awesome candles. We will focus on two different methods in this tutorial and once they are mastered we also show how to create these candles with different shapes recessed onto the front
To start you will have had to finish our how to make a pillar candle tutorial. It is required because you must have a regular pillar candle to grub or ice.
For the purpose of this tutorial, we are starting with a pre-existing pillar candle. If you followed the How to make a pillar candle with a metal mold, you could have just added an extra 10 ounces of wax for the outside texture. Of course you would need to modify the amount of scent and dye used as well.
Step 1. Getting our supplies together
First let’s measure our wax. The wax we are using in this example is IGI 4625. It comes in ten-pound slabs. We simply break the slab into small pieces with a hammer.
The results of this technique vary and you will have to experiment with the amount of wax needed. I would start with around 10 ounces of wax for your average size pillar candle.
Step 2. Melting our wax
Now it’s time to melt the wax that we prepared in step 1.The wax we have chosen for this example has a melt temp of 140- 150 degrees . It has a suggested pour temp of 185 degrees . It is important that we do not pour our wax at a temp that is too high, this will burn off our candle scent before the wax hardens.
Turn the burner on and bring the water in your double boiler to a slow boil. Add your wax to the top pan.
Do not put the wax in the boiling water.
Important Tip! The wax will turn from a solid white to a clear liquid. Wax expands as it is heated so make sure that your top pan or pour pan has plenty of room to allow for the wax to expand. Once the wax has achieved a nice temp of 185 degrees , we bring the heat down on the double boiler.
Step 3. Adding candle dye
We have chosen a liquid candle dye because it is easy to use. Beware, this dye is highly concentrated and will stain clothing and countertops.
WEAR GLOVES!
We add our dye directly to our wax. We will mix the dye with a wooden skewer until it is distributed evenly.
