Making a Pillar candle the finish!

By admin | November 7, 2007

The last and final stages of making a pillar candle!

Step 8. Repour

We are almost done!
Now that our candle has cooled and our wax has shrunk, we need to fill the void that appeared when the wax cooled. Reheat our wax to 190 degrees .

When the wax has reached our desired temperature we pour it into the mold and fill the void. Now we wait again. By doing our repour at a hotter temperature it allows the wax to properly adhere.

Step 9. Demolding the candle

Ahhhh… All that hard work is about to pay off. It’s time to reveal our masterpiece. Remove the clay or mold sealer from the bottom of the mold.

Once the candle has cooled completely, we need to get it out of the mold. Cooling time can vary drastically by candle size and climate so you will have to experiment.

When I first demolded a candle from a metal mold, I wasn’t quite sure how to get it out. I pulled and pulled on the reaming wick. This can work but for me it didn’t I pulled the wick right out of the candle.

Important Tip! Take the candle mold and put it in the freezer for about 10-15 minutes. Again this can vary by the candle size and climate and you will need to experiment.

If you leave it in the freezer to long it will form cracks all along the
outside of the candle. This mistake can actually produce very interesting candle designs that are truly one of a kind. Sometimes mistakes make great new products!

So you might wonder just why we put the mold in the freezer. By introducing our wax to extreme cold temperatures we cause it to shrink just enough to allow for easy release from the mold. Now you can gently pull it out by the wick or gently tapping the mold. If it doesn’t want to come out, you might need more time in the freezer.

Step 10. Trimming and Finishing

Now that your candle is free from its prison of the metal mold. We can clean it up a bit. You can simply trim the remaining wick with scissors.

Important Tip!

It you find that the bottom of the candle is uneven don’t panic. This tip will show you how to fix it.

You will need a cookie sheet. Simply place the cookie sheet over boiling water. Once the cookie sheet has become heated you can place the candle on the cookie sheet and move it in circular motions to even it out.
BE CAREFUL NOT TO BURN YOURSELF.
