Valentine’s Day candle creations! Part 1
By admin | January 13, 2008
In this candle tutorial, I will show you how to make a great heart shaped candle that is perfect for Valentine’s Day and the beauty of this candle tutorial is that we don’t even need a candle mold!
Supplies need for the heart shaped candle
- Fire extinguisher
- An Accurate Digital gram scale
- Craft Scissors
- Masking Tape
- Pen or Pencil
- Manilla Folders or Card Stock
- Wick Pin
- Pre-Tabbed Wick
- Hot Glue Gun
- Glue Sticks
- Pillar Wax ( There are many waxes available in candle making. For this example we have chosen a pre-blended paraffin wax. This wax has a high melt temp and it is very easy to use. It also has a wonderful scent throw without using any Additives. The wax is manufactured by The International Group. The product name is IGI 4625. )
- Candle Scent
- Candle Dye
- Thermometer
- Double Boiler
- Gloves
- Hammer for breaking wax
- Eye protection (You don’t want hot wax, dye or scent in your eyes)
- Small plastic cups
Step 1. Getting our supplies together
First let’s measure our wax. The wax we are using in this example is IGI 4625. It comes in ten-pound slabs. We simply break the slab into small pieces with a hammer. We will be using about 1 pound of wax for this candle tutorial.
See our section on how to figure out how much wax you will need for your candle.
Step 2. Making our Mold
I told you in the beginning of this candle tutorial that we didn’t need a mold and now I am going to show a great candle making secret! We will create our own mold out of some manilla file folders or you can use cardstock.
What? You say….. We are going to make a candle mold from manilla folders or card stock?
Yes we are!
These two mediums are quite easy to shape, so let’s get to making our mold!
First we cut our manilla folders in long strips. If you want your candle 3 inches tall then cut two long strips 4 inches tall ( allow 1 inch to avoid overflow) like the picture below.

Now that we have our two strips, we need to adhere them together. Lay the two strips end to end just slightly overlapping. Take a piece of masking tape and place it where the two pieces intersect. Take a pen or pencil and press the tape down like in the picture below.

Make sure that you have enough tape to overlap on the top and bottom. Use your fingers to press the tape down. Now you should have the two strips taped together like the picture below.

Now take the one long strip and make a circle, the size you would like your candle to be. See the picture below.

Using scissors trim off the excess paper.

Once again we need to tape our mold shut.

This time we want it to be a circle like in the picture shown below.

Now that we have our mold made, it’s time to move on to the next step.
